Burts Carpets of Darlington

This year is our 80 year celebration of trading in Darlington. The business has evolved a lot over the years and is now run by Claire Kerr and her husband Graeme who carry on the legacy of providing all types of carpets and flooring to homes and businesses across Darlington and the surrounding areas.

Claire’s Grandfather was the original Mr Burt and he was supported by his wife Doris when the flooring business was established immediately after the end of the Second World War in 1945. Flourishing in Gladstone Street throughout the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s it was Claire’s Mum and Dad, Marion and Barry who really expanded the offering when they took the bold decision to move to a large building on Valley Street in the 1980’s. After a number of premises moves over the next couple of decades the shop has now been on East Mount Road for over 20 years where we have all the leading flooring brands available.

There have been many challenges to overcome in the last 80 years including a fire and a gas explosion that in both instances resulted in the the shop on Gladstone Street being destroyed and there has certainly been a lot of change in flooring since 1945 but what remains is our commitment to service, quality and price.

Wishing Malcolm All The Best In His Hard Earned Retirement

After serving customers for over 30 years at Burts Carpets in Darlington, Malcolm has chosen the end of July 2024 as the right time for retirement!

Malcolm has seen many changes over the last 30 years or so at our family business - including moving shops from Gladstone Street to Valley Street then to Russell Street before moving to King Street and finally to Eastmount Road.There has also been a shift in the types and patterns of carpets he has sold starting with heavily patterned traditional Axminster styles changing to the modern day trend plain coloured stain resistant carpets.

"Have you not retired yet?" has been a standing joke in the shop by both customers and his co-workers since before Covid! We always knew he would eventually retire but never wanted the day to come. As many of you will know Malcolm is exceptionally good fun to be around and our shop floor will never be the same without his unique sense of humour. He has always been a fantastic salesman and this is simply down to the fact that he is one of the most likeable people you could ever hope to meet.

From his Burts Family we wish him all the best in joining his wife Laura, who also retired from the NHS earlier this year, in many years of relaxation and enjoyment. Congratulations Mal from Claire, Graeme, Julie, Trevor, Kelly, Lee, Billy, Rob and Mark.

Parquet Effect flooring to function suite at Bannatyne Hotel Darlington

Hotel function room transformed into a modern multi use space

As part of an existing extension to the fabulous Georgian townhouse hotel the Bannatyne Hotel Darlington have continued their refurbishment in their function suite.

This area previously had a carpeted floor finish and they wanted a more contemporary feel and practical floor finish to this large function room that is utilised for many events including weddings, conferences, live music, discos, etc. We recommended a Luxury Vinyl Tile to be used and Invictus LVT Maximus Highland Oak Canyon in a parquet finish was chosen.

The total job was completed over 4 days and we removed the existing carpet and prepared the sub floor with a screed from Ardex, the LVT tiles were then laid in a parquet effect and the colours tone perfectly with the decoration to give a fantastic finish to this multi purpose room.

I have a Line in my carpet - Help!

Pole Mark in Carpet - information

We come across this situation on a daily basis and quite often customers worry about this type of line and think it is a manufacturing fault or the fitter has put a join in the carpet where it was not necessary to do so. To help put people's mind at ease we have shown the above photo and the video below to help explain.

There are a number of reasons that you may find a line in your new carpet and some are more problematic than others but the most common one is what is known as a "pole mark". This is a line across the width of the carpet and the above picture is a perfect example. It will be approximately 12 to 18 inches from the end of the carpet length.

The line is caused by the leading edge of the carpet digging into the pile of the carpet when it is rolled onto the cardboard pole/tube and this causes pressure on the pile of the carpet and temporarily squashes it down. This action creates a virtually straight line across the width of the carpet.

It can look quite horrendous - especially when you consider you have just spent loads of hard earned money on what you were expecting to be a perfect carpet! The key thing to remember is this line is only temporary. It is not a manufacturing fault or a bad fitting job! This line will fade over a number of weeks and disappear completely. It will get better with use of the carpet, vacuuming, etc.

You could argue that the manufacturers or suppliers should add another 12 to 18 inches of carpet onto each order so this line can be cut out. Sadly this is not practical as the cost implication would not be feasible when considered against the temporary nature of the line. In the past different companies have tried to find solutions including adding a feeder paper at the start of the pole to protect the carpet from the leading edge, unfortunately the success of this is very limited and actually creates a larger but flatter area of marking.

In conclusion, these pole marks are something we have to live with but fortunately they are temporary and will come out in time.

Recycled and Regenerated Super Soft Carpet

Carpet has never been known to be a particularly environmentally friendly product but Associated Weavers, who are one of Europe's leading carpet manufacturers, have been quietly developing their Sedna range that moves as close as we have seen to a carpet that is eco friendly.

They have made a range that is not only soft, luxurious and durable but also more kind to the environment than most other carpet ranges on the market. The environmentally friendly credentials come from the fact that the fibres in the pile are made with ECONYL®. This is a regenerated nylon which is a great option for carpets as it is hard wearing and super soft. Almost unbelievably the yarn is made from recycled waste material. The highlight of this recycling is that they source abandoned fishing nets that have been collected from the bottom of the sea, this is mixed with other recycled nylon products such as old carpet and regenerated into "new nylon".

Whilst this is great news for the planet they have made an almost more important step with this carpet - the backing is made from 100% recycled PET plastic bottles!

We think the challenge has been put down to the other carpet manufacturers to come up with their own ways of making carpet more friendly to our environment.

It is great to see that leading national retailers are supporting this carpet too - SCS have 2 ranges, Oceanus and Delphin.

A Great example of our highly skilled workmanship on an open plan staircase

This was a difficult job that required our expert skills. We cut each stair tread of this beautiful axminster wool tartan style checks and plaid carpet and whipped the edges to form a neat stair tread pad. This was all done in-house by our own team and it looks stunning.

The carpet is a wool axminster style and is ideal for staircases. The customer made a great choice in colour and quality, guided by our sales team and they had a great idea in mind to place individual treads on their open plan stair case.

Which type of vacuum cleaner should I use for my new carpet?

Here we look at different vacuum cleaner types for the various types of carpet.

No matter what type or quality of carpet you have bought it is essential to look after it and maintain it regularly. To help you maintain your new carpet’s good looks it is essential you take good care of it, maintain and clean it properly.

The first key point is to vacuum regularly! This avoids particles of loose dirt and dust working their way into the carpet pile and becoming difficult to remove. If dirt and dust do get embedded into the carpet they they can act abrasively on the fibres and discolour and prematurely wear the carpet.

Top 5 Carpet Care Tips -

Vacuum regularly - at least 2-3 times a week.

Use a door mat - a large, strong doormat will reduce dirt from outside being spread around the house.

Remove shoes - this will lessen the impact of everyday wear and tear.

Carpet colour - if possible avoid light coloured carpets next to entrances.

Vacuum Regularly - Man-made fibre and wool carpets should be vacuumed regularly as soon as they are laid.

These are great general tips but here at Burts of Darlington we believe the single most important factor in good carpet care is choosing the right vacuum cleaner. This might sound obvious and the answer is not to necessarily go and buy the most upto date and expensive option available but we strongly recommend you make sure the machine is suited to the type of carpet you have. There are 2 basic types of vacuum cleaner - cylinder or upright and 2 types of heads - beater bars with brushes and suction only heads.

LOOP PILE CARPET

Loop pile carpets should ideally be vacuumed with a cylinder cleaner using the suction head only. Avoid using beater bars and brushes that might damage the fibres and will give your carpet a bobbled and pilled appearance.

CUT PILE AND TWIST PILE CARPET

These should ideally be vacuumed with an upright vacuum cleaner with a beater bar and brush. You can also opt to use a cylinder vacuum cleaner with a similar attachment. The beater bar helps to remove dust and dirt that might have fallen into the pile and it also helps to make the pile stand back up straight.

SOFT DEEP PILE CARPET

We recommend a vacuum cleaner with an adjustable height for soft deep cut pile carpets, to ensure proper airflow over the pile surface, during cleaning. A number of carpets that have very fine fibres such as iSense and super soft feel nylon fibres are very difficult to vacuum as the machine creates a seal around the base plate and you can not push the cleaner about.
